More about Shrink Wrapping your boat

Shrink wrap your boat and add that extra layer of protection to your boat as part of your winterization process. By properly shrink wrapping your boat it can last years providing waterproof and UV protection for your watercraft, machinery, or personal property.

Shrink wrap is a polyethylene film that is used to cover the object or vessel shrunken tight creating a protective covering of skin from snow, ice and debris

Shrink wrap comes in a number of sizes and thickness depending on what is needed for the area and application and duration of protection needed.

In Utah we primarily use shrink wrap for the harsh winter climate and elements to protect boats while in storage for the winter months. Shrink wrap also protects from the pollution in the air and from industrial fall out over time and will keep boat clean over the time of storage so when it is pulled out the boat is ready for use. Detail your boat and put it away ready to use in the summer.

How is shrink wrap done?

The process begins by prepping the boat by creating a frame or support structure acting as a skeleton that the film can be shrink wrapped to. This is done by using support poles and in some cases using the existing structure such as a tower on a wakeboard boat. Strapping lines are run from bow to stern and port to starboard completing the frame. A belly line is ran with a number of support lines that creates a cage or to complete the frame for the shrink wrap film.

The shrink wrap is sized and custom fitted to your boat. This shrink wrap film is pulled over and draped over the frame of the boat that we have created and secured to the belly line. This is done by folding the ends around the belly line and welding with heat creating a snug fit around the boat.

The belly line is tied down so that when heated the film won’t lift out of place. The film is completely heated and forms tightly around the skeleton or frame that was created.

Ventilation is the final step along with taping up all the seams and any holes etc.

Bear Lake Utah-Idaho, Watersports, Boating, Boat Rental

Bear Lake
Boating is a popular activity at Bear Lake. The lake is 20 miles long and 8 miles wide, providing space for many different types of watercraft.
Bear Lake is one of best kept secrets in utah/Idaho a mountain lake with plenty of sandy beach to play on and the lake is big enough not to be crowded. Bear Lake is often called the Caribbean of the Rockies for its intense turquoise-blue water. If you traveling through the Logan canyon you can enjoy the beautiful scenery but as visitors catch there view of the lake they are amazed at is almost unreal blue water and wonder what makes the lake so blue. The unique color of the water is due to the reflection of the limestone deposits suspending in the lake. Garden City is famous for the Raspberry Days celebration and there famous Raspberry Shakes and is a must try while you are there.
Bear Lake can be a little chilly early in the season but even June is a little nippy but warms up well for end of June through September, Bear Lake has become a year round favorite vacation spot. Winter activities may involve snowmobiling, snowboarding/snow skiing at Beaver Mountain Nestled in the Cache National forest in Logan Canyon only 15 minutes west of Bear Lake on scenic US 89.
Bear Lake is a great location for a family or business retreat. Leave the crowds, congestion, and traffic behind to create out-door memories for your family reunion or vacation while enjoying clean air.

History of Bear Lake
The Bear Lake Valley was first inhabited by Shoshoni Tribes, then fur trappers. Between 1825 & 1840, many mountain men and Native Americans met on the south end of the lake to swap goods and stories! These meetings became known as mountain man rendezvous.

The first permanent settler to the Bear Lake Valley was reportedly Thomas Pegleg Smith, a crusty, one-legged, ex-mountain man. During the 1840s, he set up a trading post to provide supplies to the emigrants on the famous Oregon Trail. Early Mormon pioneer leader Brigham Young sent the first group of permanent settlers to Bear Lake Valley in 1863. This group was led by Charles C. Rich. The County bears his name.

Howto choose a wakeboard 101, wakeboarding

How to Choose a Wakeboard

How do you know that your new wakeboard will be the right size, shape and of course everyone wants to look great at the same . It wouldn’t hurt to check in with your local Pro or water sports shop in making sure your making the right choice for you.

Determine your ability level and riding style to help you pick out a wakeboard. Learn about wakeboard features. Then figure out the weight of the riders who will use the wakeboard to select the correct wakeboard length.

Choosing a Wakeboard Length is the most important decision in choosing a board, you can ride well on any board if it is sized correctly.

The size wakeboard you ride will depend on your weight and riding style. Every specific wakeboard has specific sizing guidelines for rider weight. If there are multiple people using your wakeboard, base your selection on the weight of the rider who rides the most or the heaviest rider. Riders can become extremely frustrated with wakeboards that are not long enough to float them sufficiently. However, there is a range in the length wakeboard you can ride. Here are some reasons why you may choose to go with a longer or shorter wakeboard.

Basic Size Chart Each manufacture will have there size chart for there boards
Wake board sizing chart based on maximum pounds in board length

Up to 85 lbs 119cm
Up to 105 lbs 121cm
Up to 130 lbs 130cm 131cm
Up to 160 lbs 132cm 133cm
Up to 180 lbs 134cm 135cm
Up to 200 lbs 136cm 139cm
200 lbs & Up 140cm & Up

Shorter Wakeboards

Some wakeboarders like to ride a board at the short end of their suggested size range. The feeling you get from a shorter wakeboard depends on the board’s shape, but in general, shorter boards are slower and take more energy to push through the water (the more surface area the board has on the water, the faster it will move across the surface). However, a shorter, wakeboard is easier to spin and maneuver in the air as you flip or fly across the wake. However, the decreased surface area makes landings harder and the nose may tend to dig in which causes your nose and the rest of your face to dig into the water too.

Longer Wakeboards

Longer wakeboards are typically easier to ride and learn on, they have a solid feel that will really boost you off the wake. Longer wakeboards are heavier which means you work harder against the weight in the air, but you also get more control so longer boards are great for learning tricks for the first time. The longer wakeboard has more surface area so it will sit on top of the water nicely and move quickly through the water. The increased surface area of a longer wakeboard will offer softer landings.

Ryder Style and Ability Levels

A range of wakeboard shapes are available tailored for different ability levels. For the most part, anyone can ride any shape wakeboard as long as it is large enough. Some shapes make it easier to learn, but a “beginner” should not shy away from an “advanced” board shape. Likewise an “advanced” rider will not necessarily be restrained by riding a “beginner” board shape. The most important factor is selecting the right size. Choosing a wakeboard is a personal preference and can be a lot of fun looking for just the right style and look for you. Now there are a lot of great graphics on most brands of boards

How do you determine your ability level? As per Wakeboard Magazine

Beginner-Intermediate

If you have never ridden before, ride occasionally, or are just beginning to cross the wake, check out the Beginner-Intermediate Wakeboards. In general, these wakeboards have continuous or mellow 3-stage rockers and tend to be priced for recreational riders.

Intermediate/Advanced
If you are crossing the wake in both directions and clearing the wake, take a look at Intermediate-Advanced Wakeboards. There is a ton of variety in this category, so make sure you read up on the wakeboard features below to understand which features compliment your riding style before you decide on a wakeboard.

Advanced/Expert

If you know how to spin, are attempting new tricks, stomping inverts or wakeboarding while juggling horseshoes you probably want to look at Advanced-Expert Wakeboards. In general, these wakeboards have aggressive continuous or 3-stage rockers and are less forgiving. Advanced-Expert Wakeboards are often rider pro models. The bottom line is that these wakeboards are aggressive.

Wakeboard features

Knowing your ability level you can understand how features on your board can effect the fell of the ride of the wakeboard.

Wakeboard Rocker and Riding Style

Continuous Rocker (smooth, continuous arch)
A continuous rocker has one smooth fluid, curved shape. Wakeboards with continuous rocker provide fast, smooth rides and allow you to hook up turns more easily. You can generate a lot of speed on a continuous rocker wakeboard. Speed and a very predictable pop (height) when you hit the wake will shoot you farther out into the flats. Continuous rocker wakeboards are great for carving, especially on those glassy-smooth mornings.

3-Stage Rocker (angled with a flat spot)
A Wakeboard with a 3-stage rocker features there distinct plane on the bottom of the board. A 3- Stage rocker causes your wakeboard to respond with more pop (height) when you hit the wake. However, more rocker is not always better. With more dramatic rocker a wakeboard has the looser or slippery feel on the water surface. The shape can cause he board to plow rather than cut through the waters, and could be slower. Fins can become less effective when relying more on edging the board. Wake boards with 3-stage rocker have a flat spot making the impact of landings more intense and can fell a little sluggish after landing a jump. If you think you’re not getting enough pop out of the board because it’s continuous, its not the board----Sorry.
Hybrid Rocker (a combination of continuous and 3-stage)
Living somewhere between a continuous and 3-stage rocker, the hybrid rocker features a blend of continuous and three-stage rockers. Some hybrid wakeboard rockers include: Blended 3-stage, Continuous Hybrid, Progressive, Subtle three-stage

Wakeboard Base Shapes
Concaves are basically special dents on the bottom of your wakeboard that create lift and act as suction-reducing accelerators so the board will sit higher in the water and cruise like a hovercraft.

Channels act like long, extruded fins on the bottom of the board and break surface tension before the rest of the wakeboard hits. Think swan dive vs. belly-flop.

V-shape or spines help soften landings and allow you to easily roll from edge to edge similar to the v hull shape of some boats. V-shapes are often added to wakeboards with 3-stage rockers to soften landings.

Featureless - Wakeboards without any molded-in fins or channels are considered featureless. A featureless bottom leaves the work and performance to the wakeboard’s shape alone; the overall shape, rocker and fin setup on your board will really affect the ride.
Wakeboard Edges

Sharpness - The sharper the edge or rail, the more aggressively the wakeboard will track, resulting in improved acceleration and overall speed. The drawback of a sharp edge is that it is easier to catch an edge, resulting in a fly swatter-like effect with your face. A sharp edge is less forgiving than its rounded counterpart. Riders who enjoy surface tricks or riding sliders are advised to look for wakeboards with rounder or variable edges to give a buttery feel. Riders who like an aggressive, hard carving ride will feel at home on a sharper rail. Grip it and rip it.

Variable edges give you a blend of feel and performance found in sharp versus round edged boards. Variable edged boards have different sharpnesses in the middle vs. the tip and tail of the board. Variable edges are thicker and rounder (softer) in the middle of the wakeboard and grow progressively thinner (sharper) towards the tip and tail. The variable edge allows the wakeboard to maintain a high level of tracking/grip while edging while at the same time giving you a soft forgiving edge for butter slides or any surface tricks. The variable edge, “soft to sharp” pattern, creates lift and pop toward center of board and the thinner edges toward the ends make the wakeboard faster and better suited for carving.

Wakeboard Fins

Fins are like claws that grip the water differently depending on the number, size and placement on the wakeboard.
Fin Placement and Size
Deeper or longer fins create a more stable ride and give you less ability to break the board free for surface tricks… actually, any tricks. Beginning riders often benefit from longer, deeper fins when they start riding. As you advance you may want to break the board loose with less effort by removing fins or selecting a board with less traction. A higher quantity of fins or fins placed near the outside edges of the wakeboard will be more effective.

Removable vs. molded-in
Removable fins can be unscrewed and removed from the wakeboard while molded-in fins are glassed into the wakeboard and do not come off. Many wakeboards have molded in fins toward the outside and removable fins closer to the center. Molded in fins are more durable on sliders. Removable fins give you more options to change the feel of your ride.

Fin Maintenance
Check fin screws regularly to make sure they are securely attached to your wakeboard. The fins and their screws do not float. When you nick your removable fins don't fret you can sand them out or purchase new fins.
Wakeboard Weight: How does weight affect performance?

Lightweight
Lightweight wakeboards are a joy to ride. With no extra weight holding you down, lightweight wakeboards make for super smooth riding and easy maneuvering. Wake manufacturers are constantly developing new materials and technology to make lighter wakeboards. Upgrading to a super light board is like trading your Honda Civic for a Porsche, it is light, fun, fast, but with a higher price tag.

Base Material

You will want to consider base material if you will be using your wakeboard on sliders that may impact the base.
Grind Base
Grind bases were developed in response to the increasing popularity of rail riding. This style of riding requires a tough base with exceptional durability to withstand the wear and tear from sliding over PVC, metal or docks.

Wakeboard Boots
Boots are a huge part of wakeboarding and have improved more than most wakeboard products in the last 10 years. Make sure you try close tip and open to boots before you get set on a style or type. Nobody’s feel are alike. If you have a number of riders on your board open-toe boots may be a must. If you have never tried a pair of closed-toe wakeboard boots on the water you may want to give them a shot. You may be amazed. With open-toed boots make sure the support goes all the way over the toes.

Maintain Your Wakeboard

Keep your wakeboard out of the sun for long periods of time. Sun damages gear just like skin.Rinse your gear with fresh water after use in salt water. Protect your investment with a wakeboard bag for storage.

Young Children and boating

Kids and boating

When we purchased our first boat we my wife was pregnant with our second to the last child. She was excited for the boat but only had a few weeks of fun wakeboarding and water skiing before the doctor told her she would have to through in the towel for the season. She was able to enjoy the 2nd season but it was some what challenging with a little one. The following year she was pregnant with our last child now we had two little ones, the challenge was to find ways on the boat that would make things easier on my wife and I and the kids. Here are just a few tips

1.) Don’t forget the diaper bag, bring extra cloths, and lots of wipes

2.) Sun Screen, Sun Screen, Sun Screen, Sun Screen, Sun Screen, it is never a good time if one of the kids gets to much sun. We spend a lot of time on the water and I am glad to say kids don’t have darkened skin from exposure to the sun. Keep that sunscreen on.

3.) Even though we are an outfitter by trade we insistent about all the kids under 14 putting on there life jackets before they even reach the dock. If all the kids do it the younger ones struggle less. Most fatalities are because of no life jackets. Take the worry away and stay safe.

4.) Most small kids and babies after a little struggle with the feeling of being confined in a life vest will settle down because of the activity and the hum of motor and the rocking of the water in many cases puts them to sleep.

5.) It is always a good idea to have a covering or shade. Most boats now days have bimmi tops to provide a little protection from the sun’s rays.

6.) Try to make it fun even for those that aren’t water skiing, wakeboarding or doing some of the water sports. After every few riders we stop the boat and let everyone in the boat jump in and swim around, in life vests of course. Remember stay safe, even adults can get into trouble in deep water. Our rule is that anyone on our boat the gets into that water has to be wearing a life vest. The kids sometime will have more fun with this than any activity.

7.) Take turns with the little ones so everyone has a good time.

8.) Don’t push kids or adults for that matter to do anything that they are not comfortable with. It’s not fun if they are scared, most people have to work up to it in there own way. It’s not uncommon for parents to push there kids to wakeboarding, water ski or other water sports before they are ready and sometimes can create more fear of the waters.

9.) Can’t stress enough sun screen and life vests

Parents, little kids can be apprehensive or dare devils some will even try to hang over the edge. Many of our rescues in our outfitting happen while little ones are sitting next to there parent.

Water Trampolines, Family Reunions, Rentals

Water Trampolines are great for keeping the kids busy and entertained all day on the beach. They are a must with big groups.  While part of the group is out on the boat, the others have a fun diversion while waiting on the beach. They are also great for those who prefer the beach to the boat. We added it as a rental last year and couldn't keep up with the requests for rentals during the summer months. The most popular sizes have been from 10 ft to 15 ft. due to ease of transportation, size, and cost of rental. The really big ones are a lot harder to transport, clean, and take care of but are a lot of fun.

Water Trampolines are great for groups, family events, or any lake or beachside activity involving kids. They can be quite expensive to purchase; low end for a small one can be close to $800.00 and go up to $5,000.00 for larger sizes. One of the real dilemmas when purchasing a water trampoline is storage.  They do take up room when they are not being used. You would need to have good storage space in your home or a storage unit where it can be kept when not in use. If you you live at the waters edge or have the oppurtunity to use it frequently, it would be a great investment. If a water trampoline is an occasional treat, renting may make more sense for you.

Water Trampolines are a great way to get young kids used to the water in a fun way. Jumping in the water, playing king of the mountain, or just laying on a trampoline in the sun gives kids the opportunity to spend time in the water and learn safe water practices. Our family makes sure all the kids wear life vests when playing on the tramp as a saftey precaution. It is a great way to get the kids used to wearing a life vest in the water so when they get on the boat they are accustomed to the idea and don't fight it. A life vest should be second nature and kids should see it as a must on the water.

Buy or Rent a Boat that is the question??

The real question is, how much will you use the boat??? Many people love the water and boating but their commitments, families, or jobs limit the time that can be spent on the water. If you are like our family (we live for the water) you try get to the lake at least two to three times a week, even if its only for a few hours. People who will get that much use out of a boat need to buy one. Most people however don't have that opportunity and are lucky to get out on the water 2 weekends a month, 3-5 months of the year. In this case it may be better to rent or charter a boat rather than buy one.

Boating, as much as I love it, can be a very expensive hobby.  Many new boat owners are surprised at all the costs attached to owning a boat. We joke all the time that Boat = Break out another thousand.  It sounds funny but can be very true. When you first buy your boat there are always the costs of not only the boat but equipment as well. One can easily spend $2,000 to $3,500 minimum in life vests, ropes, anchors, wakeboards, water skis, tubes, trailer locks, travel boat covers, knee boards, wake surf boards and of course the list can go on and on. Pricing for a boat can be anywhere from $40,000 to $100,000 but if you are in the market for a boat right now, we are enjoying a great buyers market. If you are ready and determined to buy a boat now is the time.

Cost of Boat Ownership

Loan interest, depreciation, maintenance, insurance, winter storage or shrink wrap; these are a few items to keep in mind.

On a $60,000 dollar boat you can expect to pay $7800 in payments based on a 15 year note at around 7.50%.  If you are financing the boat for less time, your monthly payments may be even more. You will spend $900 - $1500 for winter storage or $400 for Shrink Wrap (you need to protect your investment with proper storage). Insurance for the year will be up to $1,500 and of course maintenance on the boat, of which there will be plenty, can average around $1200 - $1500 per year at marine prices of over $100 dollars an hour. In this scenario we haven’t even figured in the depreciation on the boat. If this doesn't scare you away then let’s go shopping and find your dream boat.

Renting or charters - an Alternative to Boat Ownership

The Alternative to buying a boat is to rent or charter from a reputable service. TK Watersports has created  a pretty good business trying to solve this issue for those who don't have the time, or sometimes the funds, for full boat ownership. For that same $60,000 dollar boat, you can rent 10 times for $5,500 or do full service water sports charters for around $7,500 including all equipment, water sports instruction, and all work done for you. Your savings in a three year period, not counting your depreciation cost, could be as much as $14,529-$20,529 depending on regular rental vs. VIP Watersports rentals.

Again the real question is how much will you use the boat? If you run a boat like we do, you may be a great candidate for boat ownership.  If you only will use it 15 times or less a year, you are better off renting or chartering without all the hassles of boat ownership.

Keep Your Boat Clean

Boat Cleaning Tips

Many boat owners, wanting to keep their investment in tip-top Shape, and often ask “what is the best way to maintain my boat?” The answer is so simple it’s almost a no brainer, clean your boat after every use you will save your self alot of head aches. Part of the boating experience is putting the equipment away properlly and can be a team building experience for groups & families as they work together. We even get the little ones involved each armed with a towel and some spray. Getting the troops involved can be a fun way to wind down the day at the lake so.... crank up the toons, have fun make it part of the boating experience.

Clean Your Boat

1. After every trip, give your boat a good rub down avoid harsh
Cleaners and agents that could remove any protection that you have
On the boat.

2. Scrub in small portions rinse the deck, fitting ,hull and outboard motor using a biodegradable, PH marine soap and a deck brush with medium stiffness bristles. If you use a brush with bristles that are too stiff, it can harm the boats finish.
3. With a soft sponge and marine soap, wash in small areas, rinse,
The exterior and superstructure including vinyl seats, deck ,boxes,
Windshield, etc.

4. Thoroughly dry the boat with a soft ,dry cloth
5. Clean windows using a commercial solution or vinegar and water.
Caution about vinegar and water if you like use this to take water spots off  on the main body of the boat it can take off any wax or protectant you may have on the gel coat. Vinegar and water is a cheap way to take off waterspots but make sure you put a wax on your get coat often. There are many products you can get commerically that help with water spots

6. Treat all vinyl with a commercial vinyl treatment to protect
And preserve your boats upholstery.

7. If you trailer your boat, don’t forget to scrub and rinse the trailer to.

8. Have a place for all equipment, everyone will get to know where it goes and will try to get gear in its assigned spot cutting down on some of the work for the captain of the boat. Ropes, wakeboards, water skis life vests, tubes etc can have there asigned spot.

Lake Havasu for Spring Break or Early Bird Watersports Trip

Do you own or have access to a boat? No problem just call TK Watersports for a full service water sports spring vacation. Do you long for opportunities to waterskiing or wakeboard wake surf or knee board? Are you bored with traditional Spring Break scenes? Do you want to try something different? Look no further – Lake Havasu is the Spring Break destination for you!

For those of you who have been there and done that as far as the usual Spring Break hotspots are concerned, and who feel that you have outgrown the resort scene and need a change, Lake Havasu provides the perfect solution – Spring Break on the water! Every Spring Break, the lake fills with more boats than can be counted. It will be bumper to bumper in some places, and that's just the way the Spring Break crowds like it – because more boats means more people, and more people means more fun. In lots of places, boaters will tie their vessels together to form one huge raft effect, meaning that you can just hop from boat to boat as the parties get going.

The atmosphere is fun and casual, with everyone basking in Lake Havasu's strong sunlight, music pumping out from many boats all across the water, and everyone moving around to meet new people and have a great time in the sun. All in the most amazing surroundings you can imagine – the mountains loom large over the lake, creating a fabulous backdrop for Spring Break boat parties! If spending all day every day in your swimwear and lounging on the deck or swimming in the warm water sounds good to you, then Lake Havasu might very well be your perfect Spring Break destination!

As the day draws to a close and the sun sets, most people head inland for some great food at one of Lake Havasu's popular restaurants, where you can find a really good range of local and international cuisine. Try the fresh seafood as you dine at a casual open air restaurant overlooking the water and watch the sunset. Perfect! And then head out to one of the city's popular nightlife spots for dancing and mingling with the rest of the buzzing Spring Break crowd. You can keep it quiet and relaxed, or you can party like a mad thing – set your own pace, Lake Havasu Spring Break gives you that freedom. It's the perfect spot for a Spring Break that's out of the ordinary

If you don’t like the crowds of Spring Breaks but want to get out on the water early this season, Havasu can still be a great destination of choice. It is warmer earlier in the season making it a great choice just make sure you coordinate your vacation around major College Spring Breaks if you are trying to avoid heavy traffic.

A Case For Life Jackets

In 2009 TK Watersports performed a number of rescues, I am proud to say with no fatalities because we insist on people warring life vests. When the boat is moving and anyone jumps in the water they are required to ware a vest. Anyone 14 and younger is required to have a life vest on at all times.

Most of the parents that we work with on family reunion water sports charters, lessons, instruction are relieved when we share with them our policies on warring life vests. It makes it so they don't have to constantly fight there kids; it’s the captain’s rule.

No matter how you look at it, almost any boating accident imaginable has a predictable outcome – if you are in the water fighting for your life. Unless you are wearing a life jacket, your survival chances are marginal. Why take the chance make sure you outing is a save one.

The best case scenario would be falling overboard without sustaining an injury, and being quickly recovered by a person remaining in the boat, or by a nearby boater. In almost every other scenario I can think, surviving a boating accident that resulted in being ejected from the boat without a life jacket would depend upon a quick rescue.

I hate to be a predictor of doom and gloom, but in my experience as a professional water sports outfitter quick rescues don’t always happen. They happen but not often enough – as proven by the latest boating safety statistics:

• In 2006 there were 4,967 boating accidents
• 3,474 of the boaters required medical attention beyond first aid

• 710 recreational boaters died

• 476 of the 710 boaters drowned

• 29 children under the age of 12 died

If those statistics don’t convince you to wear a life jacket, then consider these reasons to wear a life jacket while boating:

Capsizing and falls overboard are the most reported types of fatal accidents, comprising 59 percent of all boating fatalities.Nine of ten drowning victims may have survived a capsizing or fall overboard if they had been wearing a life jacket. By wearing a life jacket while boating, you increase the chances of surviving by leaps and bounds. Think of it another way: without a lifejacket, how long can you tread water while waiting for rescue? What if you were injured?

You cannot prevent an accident by your boating skill or experience alone. Boaters with more than 100 hours boating experience, who are 36 years or older and don’t have formal boating safety education are responsible for most of the boating accidents and fatalities. Even if you have confidence in your boating skills, consider the many boaters who are less experienced and educated who share the waterways with you.

Comfort is no longer an issue. The major reason boaters forgo wearing life jackets is they value comfort over safety. Thankfully, boating supply manufacturers have responded by producing lightweight life jackets that can be worn without discomfort for an entire day of boating.

As I said, no matter how you slice it – there really is no reason not to wear a life jacket, and require all your passengers to wear one as well.

Safe boating in Winter!

Safe boating in Winter!

Most of us like boating year round if conditions are favorable. So here a few tips to help you keep safe and you boat in top condition.

1. Prepare your boat winter - If you are not going to be using you boat it's best to have it winterized. This involves a few precautionary measures to protect your boat from extended periods of non-use and colder temperatures.

2. Keep it covered - Don't let your boat be destroyed by the environment. When leaves collect on the floor of your boat, they hold in moisture. The water will then speed up the process of deterioration. A cover will maximize the life of your boat and reduce the risk of damage to your interior.

3. Underwater obstructions - Most lakes water levels are lowered in the winter. Extreme caution should be used every time you take your boat out. Rocks, sandbars, stumps, etc can cause major damage to your lower unit and/or prop. A depth finder is priceless in the winter and some units can be purchased for around $120.00. (Most props cost 2-3 times as much.)

4. Cold weather - Dress properly for the outing. I normally take a jacket of a pullover just incase the weather changes. It can be really cold when traveling across the water.

5. Safety First - Make sure you have all the necessary safety gear on board. Being prepared heads off most problems.

6. Communication - Let someone know where you're going & when you'll be back. Take a cell phone & a spare battery or a way to charge it.

Babies, Kids and Family Boating Trips
